How being a Support Worker is a way to be of service

For our Support Worker, Tatiana, support work is a genuine opportunity to serve people in meaningful ways. She has been a support worker for nearly two years with Client Care First (CCF), after eight years as a support worker in aged care, which is what led her to work as a disability support worker.

Originally from Chile and raised in Australia since she was 12, Tatiana grew up speaking Spanish at home, and later used her language skills in aged care to support Spanish, Greek, Italian, and Macedonian residents. It was a role she loved, but one that also came with emotional challenges.

“In aged care, I was caring for 32 residents with only a few staff,” she explains. “You want to give everyone time and attention, but you can’t. It was heartbreaking.”

That experience shaped her decision to transition into disability support, a field where she could provide one-on-one care and build more meaningful connections and relationships.

“With disability work, you can really meet the participant needs. You can be there for them. It’s beautiful,” she says. “You get to make a difference in a way you couldn’t before.”

Tatiana describes Client Care First as a workplace that genuinely values its people.

“When I started, I saw how they celebrated participants at Christmas. They have a big party where families and even grandchildren are invited. My family got to meet the participants and staff. It felt like a family gathering.”

For her, that sense of inclusion reflects the broader culture of the business.

“I have always been treated with respect,” she says. “If I need to talk, someone is always ready to listen. It’s a supportive environment.”

The joy of the work comes in small, meaningful moments, during conversations, shared outings, or simply being present.

“Sometimes participants thank you for talking with them or helping them understand something,” Tatiana shares. “Especially when they’re feeling down, a conversation can mean a lot. You can drive to the beach, sit and talk. That human connection really helps.”

Tatiana also values opportunities for growth and learning. She has supported participants living with complex conditions, including Huntington’s disease, and approaches every challenge with curiosity and compassion.

“We are meant to serve,” she says. “That’s what I’m here for. I’m always learning and adapting.”

What stands out most about Client Care First is its commitment to respect, for both staff and participants.

“Honest communication and respect make all the difference,” Tatiana says. “Everyone here treats each other with dignity.”

While funding limitations can sometimes restrict what participants are able to do, Tatiana remains grounded in gratitude.

“It can be frustrating, but we are still very blessed to be able to do the things we can already do.”

Her advice for anyone considering a career in support work is simple:

“Treat people as you would like to be treated. There is always someone who needs support and it could be you or someone you love one day. Kindness and respect is the priority.”

Tatiana’s story reflects the heart of disability support: building relationships, offering dignity, and helping people live meaningful lives.

For her, Client Care First isn’t just a workplace, it’s a community that values compassion and human connection. And that, she believes, makes all the difference.

           Tay Robbinson's journey with CCF

For Tayla Robbinson, coming to our Client Care First (CCF) office is about much more than work. It’s about belonging, confidence, and being recognised for the valuable contribution she makes.

Tay works as an Office Assistant, which includes a mixture of tasks, including computer work and helping behind the scenes so the organisation can run smoothly. It’s a role full of diversity, and that’s exactly what Tay loves.

Although Tay had completed work experience in an office in her younger years, stepping back into an office environment as an adult felt a bit daunting. When she found out about the opportunity, Tay was excited, but also nervous.

“It had been a while since I’d worked in an office, and I was worried I’d muck things up, especially on the computer,” she recalls.

What made the difference was support without pressure. A support worker was available if needed, but Tay was encouraged to do things independently.

Over time, Tay’s confidence grew. When CCF relocated their office from its original location in Albion Park to Wollongong, Tay felt something shift; she knew she was trusted to do the job on her own. “I think this is the first job I’ve had where they’ve actually done that,” she says.

Tay also acknowledges that CCF prioritises it’s people and their participants in ways we don’t always see. Small but meaningful gestures, like Christmas gatherings, awards and recognition at work anniversaries also help her, and others, feel seen and appreciated.

Like any workplace, there have been challenges. There are tasks that can make Tay nervous but what stands out is that she is always supported even when things don’t always work out.

“I can ask for help, and learn along the way. The main thing is that I still get in and give it a go anyway,” she says.

What brings Tay the most joy is simple but so important for all of us. She also values being part of a team that indirectly supports participants like her, too.

“I know that the work we’re doing is making a difference, even the small things.”

Client Care First is a place where participants and support workers are given opportunities and care that opens everyone up to a world of confidence, independence, and a future where all skills truly matter.

Seven years of change in the disability sector

While some things remain: we put client care first

Throughout the last seven years, the disability service provider sector has undergone profound transformation. For organisations, participants, families and workers alike, this period has been marked by both significant progress and complex challenges, all shaped largely by the evolution of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), shifts in policy, and changing community expectations.

When the NDIS was introduced nationally in the mid-2010s, it fundamentally changed the landscape for people with disability. The shift from block-funded service delivery to an individualised, participant-centred funding model gave people unprecedented choice and control over the supports they receive. Providers were suddenly operating in a market-based environment, delivering tailored services directly linked to participants’ goals and budgets. This was a radical departure from more traditional service models.

Choice and control for participants has been one of the stand-out improvements. Individuals now have the ability to choose providers that align with their unique needs, preferences and aspirations. Support services have diversified, including more focus on flexible plans, innovative service delivery models and person-centred care approaches. Providers have responded with digital tools, streamlined plan management systems, and a stronger emphasis on outcomes rather than outputs.

Another positive trend is the increase in transparency and system improvements from the NDIS. The scheme has recently implemented clearer definitions of supports, more consistent plan structures and increased visibility of funding components. This has all been designed to help both participants and providers understand and navigate the system more effectively.

However, the journey hasn’t been without its hurdles. Financial sustainability has emerged as a core challenge. Many not-for-profit and smaller providers have struggled with price caps that have failed to keep up with rising operational costs, wage pressures and compliance obligations. This has led to closures, consolidation of services and in some cases major providers ceasing disability service delivery altogether. These market pressures have raised concerns that choice and quality could diminish if smaller, community-based organisations exit the sector.

Linked to this is the workforce crisis. The disability sector continues to face difficulties recruiting and retaining skilled workers, particularly as demand grows and competition for staff intensifies. A decade of rapid expansion in provider numbers has meant more organisations vying for the same talent pool, while increased expectations for specialised skills, including cultural competency, trauma-informed care and mental health support, have transformed what is required of the disability workforce.

Policy shifts and regulatory pressures have also added complexity. Recent reforms aimed at improving the sustainability and integrity of the NDIS, such as enhanced fraud prevention measures, more automated planning tools and changes to eligibility pathways are intended to strengthen the scheme for the long term. Yet these reforms also require providers to adapt quickly to new reporting, compliance and operational frameworks.

Despite these challenges, the sector has shown resilience and innovation. Providers are embracing technology and digital platforms to improve access and engagement, enhancing service delivery, and streamlining operations. There’s also a rising focus on early intervention, community inclusion, and more holistic support models that integrate employment, housing and well-being outcomes.

In short, the disability service sector today is more dynamic, participant-centred and outcomes-focused than ever before. The last seven years have seen tremendous progress in empowerment and diversification of supports, but also significant pressure points in sustainability and workforce capacity.

As the sector continues to evolve, collaboration between government, providers, participants and communities will be vital in ensuring that quality, choice and inclusion remain at the heart of disability services for years to come.

In February 2026, Client Care First proudly celebrates its seventh anniversary. That’s seven meaningful years of walking alongside people in our community, supporting their goals, and learning from their strength, resilience and individuality. And as we mark this milestone, we reflect on the heart of our organisation: the participants who inspire us every single day.

Client Care First (CCF) began with a simple but powerful idea, that every person deserves to be genuinely seen, heard and supported in a way that honours their choices, their independence and the place they call home.

This vision was shaped long before the organisation officially opened its doors. It all began on a small family farm just outside Goulburn in south-west New South Wales, where CCF Founder and Director, Meryn Martin, grew up.

Raised in a modest, hardworking rural family, she learned early the value of community, dignity and lending a helping hand. But it wasn’t until a young family member required care that the next chapter of her life’s purpose became clear. Watching them receive support in a nursing home setting, despite being far too young for that environment, Meryn, saw firsthand that something different was needed. Something more personal. More flexible. More empowering. A model of care where individuals had genuine choice and control, and where support could happen in the warmth and comfort of their own space.

From that deeply personal experience, Client Care First was born.

Seven years on, the heart of that founding vision continues to guide every member of our team. What began as a small, values-driven service is now a trusted provider that continues to grow; one person, one family, one meaningful connection at a time.

But our growth has never been about becoming the biggest. It has always been about becoming better: stronger in our values, deeper in our relationships, and more responsive to the people we support.

Every participant who invites us into their lives brings with them a unique story. These achievements, big and small, fuel our passion. Their determination pushes us to think differently. Their individuality reminds us why personalised care matters. And their trust in us is something we never take for granted.

Our team often says that we get just as much from our participants as we give. And it’s true. We are constantly inspired by their positivity, humour, courage and capacity to grow, even in the face of challenges. They are the reason we show up with purpose each day, and the reason we continue to strive for excellence in everything we do.

As we celebrate six years, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the participants, families and carers who have been part of our journey. Their confidence in us has shaped who we are today. And as we look toward the future, one thing remains unwavering: our commitment to putting their goals, their wellbeing and their individuality first.

Here’s to seven years of Client Care First, and to the many meaningful years still to come.

Care comes first with CCF

Care is at the heart of our work

At the heart of our work is a simple but powerful principle: client care always comes first.

To deliver this promise, we know that the best outcomes for participants are achieved when everyone involved feels safe, supported and respected. That’s why we have clear policies and well-established processes in place to protect the well-being of both our participants and our support workers.

By caring for our support workers, we strengthen the care they provide. When workers feel safe, valued and supported, they are better able to show up with presence, compassion and consistency. In turn, participants benefit from stable, high-quality support that puts their needs first.

Safety is not an afterthought, it is built into how we operate every day. From thorough on-boarding and training to ongoing supervision and support, our support workers are equipped with the skills, knowledge and guidance they need to provide high-quality care in a wide range of settings.

Clear role expectations, risk assessments and communication protocols aligned with the NDIS Practice Standards and Code of Conduct help ensure workers feel confident and supported when delivering services.

Equally important is the safety and dignity of our participants, of course. We work tirelessly to create environments where individuals feel heard, respected and empowered. Our policies guide how care is delivered in a way that prioritises consent, privacy, boundaries and individual needs. By following structured processes, we help reduce risks while maintaining flexibility to respond to each person’s unique circumstances.

We also recognise that well-being goes beyond physical safety. Emotional and psychological well-being matter for both participants and workers. Open communication, clear escalation pathways and access to support ensure concerns can be raised early and addressed appropriately. This proactive approach helps prevent issues from escalating and supports positive, trusting relationships.

Our commitment to robust policies and thoughtful processes reflects our belief that safe systems create better care. It’s how we honour our responsibility to the people we support and the people who support them. That’s by ensuring well-being, trust and quality remain at the centre of everything we do.

At Client Care First (CCF), we believe that meaningful careers are built through compassion, confidence, and a willingness to grow. One of the most rewarding examples of this is seeing our support workers step into leadership roles.

In May 2025, Samantha Fox, one of our dedicated employees, was promoted from Disability Support Worker (DSW) to Team Leader, a milestone that reflects both her personal growth and CCF’s commitment to developing our people.

With five years’ experience as a disability support worker and two years with Client Care First, including 18 months as a DSW at CCF, Sam’s journey into the disability sector was driven by a simple but powerful motivation: helping people.

“I love caring for people and making their day better,” she shares. “When you walk out at the end of the day knowing you’ve made a difference, that’s what matters.”

Reflecting on her early days as a support worker, Sam says it’s often the small, human moments that stand out most. One recent experience involved a participant who is typically slow to warm to others. When Sam received a handmade Christmas card from them, it was a reminder of the trust and connection that can be built over time. Moments like these reinforce why this work is so meaningful.

The transition into leadership wasn’t something Sam initially felt fully confident about. When the opportunity to become a Team Leader was presented, Sam admits she questioned whether she was ready; whether people would listen to her or whether she would have the authority needed for the role. However, once she stepped into the position, it quickly began to feel natural.

“I realised I didn’t need to have all the answers,” she says. “I just needed to continue to ask questions and trust that I had the knowledge and skills to also make the decisions required.”

What brings Sam the most joy day to day remains the positive interactions with participants. Even on challenging days, she maintains a grounded perspective. “Every day is different, and I know I’m doing the best I can,” she explains.

A big part of what has supported her growth is the culture at Client Care First. She credits the guidance of other Team Leaders, who helped her navigate the role when she first started by answering her questions and offering reassurance.

“It really feels like a family,” she says. “Everyone is helpful, and there are so many people you can call on for support.”

Now in her Team Leader role, she is motivated to continue building her career in the disability sector with confidence. Her strengths, such as communication, teamwork, practical knowledge, and a willingness to step in wherever needed, shape the kind of leader she aims to be.

Sam’s message to other support workers who aspire to grow?

“Be confident in yourself and always ask questions. It’s better to ask a hundred questions and learn, than to ask nothing at all.”

At Client Care First, stories like this reflect what’s possible when passion meets opportunity and when people are supported to grow every step of the way.

We’re always looking for more passionate and caring people to join our team. Send your resume to admin@ccfirst.com.au

As the close of another year draws near, soon it will be time to start thinking of new goals for the next. But before we dream of milestones for 2026, perhaps it’s time to take a minute to enjoy what we’ve ticked off so far in 2025.

A big ticket item on our list of goals in 2025 was to see the completion of the specialist disability accommodation that we’ve worked in partnership with Canopy SDA to provide.

With their construction expertise and our combined vision for accessible NDIS housing, after all the planning and anticipating, we welcomed the deserving participants into their brand new home in Albion Park in October, complete with high quality assistive technology.

It’s been so wonderful to see Netty, Maria and Robyn all settling into their new home within the Albion Park community. From smart home devices that control lighting, temperature, and security with a simple voice command, to adaptive equipment like automated door openers, adjustable kitchen benches, and mobility aids, it is these tools that make everyday tasks safer and more accessible.

We’ve seen so many of our participants go from strength to strength. Brayden has been enjoying going to Sydney for music concerts and we welcomed him home here in Wollongong. Lyndell has been beautifully building her confidence and Sally has been using her new found confidence to get her own breakfast and walk to Crown Street Mall. Iggy has found more calm and enjoying his short walks, which is improving his mobility. Amazing to see.

Karen’s invested in improving her health and wellbeing and we love that Narih is still setting a strong pace when we join him on his walks. Speaking of putting us through our paces, Leicia certainly gives us a run for our money as she powers on in her wheelchair, while she’s also busy giving her time to the Wollongong Council to serve on the Disability Committee.

We’ve had some warm welcomes and said some sad goodbyes and we’re so thankful that sad times are bolstered with many happy times.

The Sydney Royal Easter Show was certainly a blast along with Halloween and the many events that happen week to week. But I must say, seeing our own Xanthe bust a move at the Illawarra’s Cancer Council Dancing with the Stars sure was a highlight and what a treat it was to see some participants get involved also.

We welcomed two new registered nurses, had many of our people step up into new roles and were fortunate to have many wonderful support workers join us throughout the year, all of whom have been building strong rapport with participants at Thomas Street and in the community.

It’s been amazing to see our young community participants regularly enjoying our School Holiday Program each term and hearing that their spirits are high when our support workers visit after school is fantastic.

We’ve seen participants buckling their own seatbelts with enthusiasm, building upon their day to day wellbeing thanks to swimming lessons and frame running into the future to enjoy more outdoor activities and movies - very rewarding to see.

What is also amazing to see is that our transport service is being put to good use, taking participants out for dinners, shopping trips, and to appointments and local cafes for coffee and chats.

Our resident artist, Juundaal, marked an artist’s exhibition at Wollongong City Art Gallery this year and embraced the opportunity to attend other events, including the Rock and Run Festival in October. Juundaal continues to build confidence accessing the community and participating in social activities during evenings and weekends, which is great to see.

Our participants have many talents, like learning to cook and prepare nutritious meals thanks to some hot tips from a support worker who is also a qualified chef. It’s so special to see so many of our participants set a goal and achieve it.

Each of our participants' goals always vary. Sometimes it’s about learning a new skill and other times it’s about building physical ability or even developing confidence to try new things.

These experiences have not only provided opportunities for fun and personal growth but have also helped participants build lasting friendships and confidence through inclusion and shared achievement.

Also in 2025, we continued our focus on making a long-term investment in regional wellbeing, community belonging, and delivering high-quality care where it’s needed. Therefore we launched a Client Care First within the Crookwell region to provide even more people access to disability services in a warm, inclusive, and empowering environment where participants, families, local professionals and community members can benefit from working with CCF to help meet individual needs and work towards shared community goals.

Client Care First is proud to reflect on the many milestones and meaningful moments we’ve shared with our participants. From community outings and creative workshops to special celebrations and themed events, each activity has been designed to bring people together, spark joy, and strengthen the sense of connection within our community.

Looking back, 2025 has been a year defined by connection, laughter, and belonging. Whether it was welcoming participants into new housing, enjoying local festivals, or simply spending time together in our activity hub, every moment has contributed to a stronger, more vibrant community.

We’re incredibly pleased of what our participants and team have accomplished together, and we look forward to carrying this same spirit of inclusion and joy into the new year, continuing to create spaces where everyone feels valued, supported, and inspired to thrive.

Because every life is worth living.

As we head into the festive season, many of us feel the familiar mix of excitement, pressure, and expectation that this time of year often brings. But for others, this can be one of the most challenging periods.

At Client Care First, we see first-hand how loneliness, family stress, and social isolation can deepen in December, even when the world around us seems to be celebrating.

It’s important to acknowledge that not everyone approaches the holidays with joy.

Some people are navigating difficult family dynamics.

           Some are grieving.

Some feel disconnected from the celebrations happening around them.

And some simply find this time of year overwhelming.

If you or someone you know is feeling lonely, isolated, or unsure where to turn, please know that you’re not alone, and that there are safe, supportive options available.

Connection doesn’t always come from large gatherings; sometimes it’s found in small, meaningful moments. A conversation with a neighbour, a visit to a local community organisation, joining a hobby group, attending a community lunch, or reaching out to a support worker can all be steps toward feeling more grounded and connected.

For those who may be struggling emotionally, the most important thing is to reach out. Support is always available, day or night:

This season, let’s lead with compassion. If you’re in a place of stability, consider checking in on the people around you, a simple message or invitation can make an enormous difference. And if you’re finding this time of year difficult, reaching out for help is an act of strength, not weakness.

At Client Care First, compassion isn’t just something written into a mission statement, it’s something lived every day. Two people who embody this mantra beautifully is Client Care First, Director, Meryn and Team Leader, Xanthe, a mother-daughter duo who work side by side supporting participants across the Shoalhaven and Illawarra. This year, they decided to take their care for others to a whole new level by shaving their heads to raise funds for the Cancer Council.

For both women, the decision to shave their heads was deeply personal and overwhelmingly purposeful. They wanted to honour friends, family, participants, and countless Australians whose lives have been affected by cancer. But just as importantly, they wanted to show their community what courage, solidarity, and love can look like.

“We see the strength of people every day in our work,” Xanthe shared. “Supporting people with disabilities has taught me that resilience comes in so many forms. Shaving my head felt like a small way to show that same strength back to a community that gives us so much.”

Meryn, who has worked in disability support for over a decade, felt a strong pull to lead by example. “I’ve always believed that helping people isn’t just a job,” she said. “It’s who we are. When you give to others, you give meaning to your own life. Shaving my head wasn’t as scary as I first thought it might be, it felt freeing. It felt like the right way to stand with people going through something much bigger than hair loss.”

Together, they set a fundraising goal and were blown away by the support that followed. Participants, their families, colleagues, and local community members rallied behind them with donations, messages of encouragement, and even offers to sit in the barber’s chair alongside them. On the day of the head shave, the atmosphere was electric; full of laughter, pride, and a few happy tears.

“We had people cheering, clapping, and hugging us,” Xanthe recalled with a smile. “It reminded me that kindness inspires more kindness. What started as a simple idea turned into something so much bigger.”

This dynamic due were also joined by WAVEFM’s Drive announcer, Mick Caruana and CCF Team Leader, Lisa and CCF Disability Support Worker, Talia. “Seeing two more of our CCF teammates jump in with us as well as Mick, it honestly felt like the whole community was standing with us. I’ll never forget that,” Xanthe said.

For Client Care First, their fundraiser was more than a feel-good moment, it was a powerful reflection of the organisation’s values. Meryn and Xanthe’s commitment to helping others mirrors the high level of care they bring to their participants daily. Their compassion extends beyond their workplace and into the broader community, reinforcing the belief that when you care deeply, you create lasting impact.

Meryn summed it up perfectly: “Every day we get to help someone achieve something, whether it’s a small win or a life-changing milestone. That’s the joy of this job. And if we can take that same energy and use it to support a cause like the Cancer Council, then that’s a privilege.”

Their shaved heads will grow back and are coming along nicely, but the message they’ve sent, and the funds they raised, will continue to make waves. In a world where kindness is one of the most valuable gifts, Meryn and Xanthe prove that compassion isn’t just something you say. It’s something you show.

Connecting with the people around us helps during uncertainty

There’s been a lot of uncertainty in the NDIS space lately. With reports of funding cuts and participants feeling like they’re slipping through the gaps, it’s completely understandable that people are feeling worried or unsupported.

But even in challenging times, there are pathways to get help, and no one needs to navigate the system alone.

Here are 3 practical ways to feel more supported when things feel unclear:

1. Connect with a trusted provider who advocates for you:
A good provider doesn’t just deliver services, they help you understand your plan, identify options, and speak up for your needs.

2. Lean on your support network:
Family, friends, other participants and support coordinators, and people to have around you who understand the system can help make some things feel lighter.

3. Get clarity through regular check-ins:
A quick conversation with your provider or coordinator can help you stay ahead of changes, understand your rights, and feel confident about your next steps.

Uncertainty doesn’t have to mean navigating things alone. Strong support, clear communication and good relationships can go a long way.
